Recently, some readers have raised questions about the fuel tank and fuel of plug-in hybrid vehicles. They thought that after purchasing a plug-in hybrid vehicle, they would switch between hybrid and pure electric modes at a high frequency, but the actual situation is that they are basically driving in pure electric mode; most plug-in hybrid vehicle users can use electricity without oil, and the result is that it may take two or three months to add oil once, and even half a year will not be able to use a tank of oil.

The ownership of plug-in hybrid cars is growing rapidly, and there will inevitably be more and more doubts in the process of using the car.

So will the gasoline expire or deteriorate in the tank?

Let's talk about the answer first: Don't worry at all.

Gasoline will evaporate but will not deteriorate

Some views believe that the shelf life of gasoline is one month or three months, but there is no theoretical support for similar views; more of them are “the active ingredient of gasoline is volatile”, if the active ingredient is volatile, the remaining part will not be able to burn well. This view cannot be agreed. The main components of gasoline are C5-C12 cyclic hydrocarbons, alkanes and aromatics. They are hydrocarbons. The so-called active ingredients are volatile. At least a chemical reaction is required before they can be decomposed and volatilized separately, but the gasoline in the tank does not have such conditions.

However, this is not the most important thing, because volatilization is not a chemical reaction. Volatilization is just the change of a substance from one state to another, and its chemical properties have not changed; the essence of a chemical reaction can be understood as the process of molecular breakdown, atomic rearrangement and synthesis of new molecules. Volatilization is not such a process, so the volatilization of gasoline is only from liquid to gaseous, and the quality has not changed.

Speaking of this, there is a preliminary answer, that is, gasoline can be allowed to evaporate, at best it will only decrease rather than deteriorate; the general understanding of deterioration is also a chemical reaction, so as long as the gasoline is reasonably sealed and stored without contact and reaction with other substances, even if the gasoline is put for a thousand years, it will not deteriorate, let alone the so-called expiration.

The fuel tank only exhausts and does not intake

There is no need to worry about gasoline in the fuel tank. Some car enthusiasts think that air entering the fuel tank will cause gasoline to deteriorate, which is obviously impossible.

The point is that it is difficult to retain air in the fuel tank, even if it has just been filled with oil.

The reason is that gasoline is very volatile and evaporative, and the volatilization is not affected by temperature factors, and it will also evaporate in cold winter; then there will be a lot of “gasoline vapor” in the fuel tank. These gasoline vapors will push out the air that enters the fuel tank when refueling, and even part of the gasoline vapor will be directly discharged out of the car-the car fuel tank is positive pressure, in short, positive pressure is to press air out, and negative pressure is to inhale inward.

Since the fuel tank is pressurized outwards, how can the air enter the fuel tank?

  Obviously not.

Therefore, plug-in hybrid cars do not have to worry about the deterioration of gasoline, nor do they have to worry about the intake of fuel tanks, especially vehicles that use high-pressure fuel tanks.Generally, the fuel tank is made of engineering plastic. The gasoline vapor inside will prop the fuel tank out. In order not to break the fuel tank, pressure relief is required; the way to relieve pressure is to connect the carbon tank through the fuel vapor exhaust pipe. The carbon tank absorbs the fuel in the fuel vapor, and then discharges the air out of the car to achieve pressure balance.

It's just that the capacity of the carbon tank is limited, and the fuel vapor will be discharged directly after the threshold value is exceeded, but for the vehicle, it is just a waste of some fuel; but don't worry, it is said that gasoline has strong volatile properties, but it is not as exaggerated as imagined. The author once stopped a motorcycle for three years without moving, and there is still about a quarter of the half tank of oil left. After the battery is connected, it can still start and drive normally.

The high-pressure fuel tank is a more commonly used fuel tank for plug-in hybrid vehicles. It is characterized by being able to withstand greater pressure and is generally made of metal materials. The high-pressure setting is precisely to lock in the fuel vapor, and it is to avoid waste as much as possible. The product of fuel evaporation and pollution, not much will be said here.

All in all, although plug-in hybrid vehicles are only a transitional technical solution, most household car users are more suitable for pure electric vehicles; but you can't talk nonsense about things. It doesn't matter if the gasoline is put on for a longer time, there is no need to deliberately consume fuel.
